I figured it out. On closer inspection the fill is open to the outside in 2 areas. closed the paths and it's ok. Didn't expect a crash though.

FWIW, the "white" appears as soon as you do anything to the mesh, add/remove a grid line, move a node, move a node handle or add a color.
