Forum Post: RE: Is X8 the biggest load of junk Corel could turn out?

Thank you for your reply Claude, Perhaps there is a part of this issue you are not aware of. I'd like to explain it to you because it is the reason I discontinued using CDX8 and went back to X7. Once the default installation of X8 has finished and you start to use it, choosing a font from an external folder full of them, Corel effectively takes control of that folder preventing it being re-named or deleted until the font that CD used from that folder is removed from the 'recent fonts' list that CD creates in a default installation. A user has to deliberately prevent CD from displaying recently used fonts from the external folder to be able to re-name or remove any external fonts folder that has even 1 font CD has recently used in it. How did I discover this? By using several Microsoft applications available to developers that allowed me to see what loaded or what files were opened at boot time. It happens even in safe mode. Something I think goes against Microsoft's conditions of use of their GUI. Setting 'display # fonts in the recent font list' to 1 will let you remove the one font from the list that is preventing CD from releasing the folder but only if you start CD first. You cannot set it to zero. There may be fonts from questionable sources that as you say, cause performance issues but all my fonts are either from the original foundry that created or owns them or from Adobe Typekit. The primary reason I could not work with CD X8 is because I often use a font from my collection to create an 'example' layout which on approval, I need the fonts I used to function in Adobe inDesign or Photoshop. It's why I use a font manager to add and remove fonts from the /windows/fonts folder on an often daily basis. CD and CFM do not allow any non Corel programs to 'see' the fonts installed in CD or by CFM. I honestly believe someone at Corel will need to alter how CD itself opens a file in an external fonts directory or provide concise documentation and/or warnings that unless you disable (something I could not do) the recent fonts list when Corel starts. Perhaps then, a part of the very serious flaws that should have been address in pre-release testing will be addressed. My personal opinion is that Corel have always released version that are shortly followed by patches to fix problems that users find. This is not a good policy to have and something far too many software companies need to address.
