As I only care about what it happens after I edit an image and/or create a design, CMYK printing lays down those colors of ink as appropriate in various densities In a pattern such as to avoid moire in that ink pattern. You may mean the theory or science of CMYK as a color space. It doesn't really concern me. I only care about the output and/or the means to get to output. And, to get there as relates to this thread (more or less), I will use a larger color space than sRGB to do so and allow a better transformation via the rendering intent.
