Forum Post: RE: Pixel Aspect Ratio

Hi Phil, Your Canadian English sounds cute to me (LOL)... (Display) Aspect Ratio describes the picture frame size ie 800 x 600, and most people read this to mean 800 pixels wide by 600 pixels high. This is correct if the Pixel Aspect Ratio (PAR) is 1:1 and this works fine on photos, etc for print. But in the wonderful world of Video (among others) the PAR is not 1:1. For Example; the standard PAL system here in the UK has a given frame size of 720 x 576 - but is viewed either on 4:3 screens (Standard) or 16:9 screens (Wide-Screen) therefore the PAR changes depending on how the frame is s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d - hence a wish to see the image as it would appear after stretching! so that circles and squares still look OK when designing. My current solution is to design in Photoshop - it has this feature!
